Do you feel nervous about selecting an interior designer? Where do you look for an Interior Designer who will be able to add value to your property and lifestyle? This article will provide you with sources of information and guidelines to assess potential Interior Designers with.

There are a many Interior Designers offering their services. How do you find the right one for you?

There are a number of ways of searching for an Interior Designer:

  • Ask your friends and colleagues.
  • Search on the Designers Institute of New Zealand www.dinz.co.nz. You will want to look at the Spatial Professional Designer listings. The Professional Designers have been recognised as having gained experience as a practicing designer and having attained a high level of professional competency in their design sector.  A professional peer review is conducted by a selected panel, to acknowledge this Professional Membership (PDINZ).
  • Search on the Houzz website (houzz.com). There will be a list of Interior Designers in your area and their listing will tell you a little about them, show you some examples of their work and show reviews of their work by previous clients.
  • Search on Google.
  • Look on the NZ Interior Designer website nzinteriordesigner.co.nz. This is a valuable reference point to quickly look at a number of successful Interior Designers.

Once you have made a short list of Interior Designers, you need to be able to assess which one would be the best fit for you. There are a number of ways of doing this:

  • Look at their websites – look for testimonials from their clients, look at the photo galleries.
  • Search on Facebook to see what information they have on their business Facebook page. This may give you an indication of their style of work, what they have been doing lately and what continuing education they may have been doing. It may also give you a feel for their personality.
  • Look for your potential Designer on Pinterest (pinterest.com), again it will give you an insight into their portfolio of work.
  • LinkedIn (linkedin.com) is another source of information, which will highlight their education, contacts and work experience.

Key attributes to look for in your Interior Designer:

  • Expertise.
  • Experience.
  • Breath of work.
  • Demonstration of an understanding of meeting their client’s requirements.
  • Great listening and communications skills.
  • Creativity.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Network of suppliers, manufacturers and tradespeople.

There are some fantastic Interior Designers out there; you should now find it easier to select the right one for your project. The key then is to ring or email the Designer you have selected or even a couple of them and talk to them about how they operate and get a feel for their personality fit with you. Also discuss pricing and terms and conditions up front so that you know what to expect.
